Le parole di Springsteen sono chiare e precise (in risposte alle molte critiche uscite da parte dei repubblicani dopo aver ascoltato alcune canzoni del suo nuovo disco Magic, uscito per la Columbia Sony) ...... Non sono un anti-americano ma da quando George W. Bush è al potere non ho mai cambiato la mia posizione, che è sempre stata fortemente critica... Le cose anti-americane sono quelle che fa questa amministrazione, come la tortura (e tutto quello che succede a Guantanamo), le intercettazioni da parte della Cia, la detenzione preventiva e la violenza della polizia..... Sono cose che non avrei mai voluto vedere nel nostro Paese, che amo fortemente, nonostante tutto questo..

Nel 2004 l'artista du uno degli artifici del tour a favore di Kerry, antagonosta nella corsa alla Presidenza proprio contro Bush: molti furo le rockstar che lo seguirono in diversi concerti, tra cui ricordiamo Pearl Jam, R.
