“The Feeling Inside”
Interview with the great Italian musicians Antonello Cresti and Andrea Gianessi. By Sergio Vilar nucleus@iwinds.com.ar

Thank you for your time and interest to answer these questions. That you can tell us regarding the origin of the band?
Antonello: I met Andrea at the University in Bologna, the first time. We talked a lot and we decided to create a musical experiment together... Our first CD was something like a meeting between two different experiences and attitudes.
We started our journey in summer 2001, we'd like to keep the flame burning for a long time!

Andrea: The first CD was a strange experiment... noise, minimalism, ballads, mantras and a strong political attitude! in Italy there was the G8 summit and we were disgusted from the bloody repression of the no global movement, so we dedicated our first album to that! Then our interests move to a more mystical vision, and so we started to explore the sacred and the human cultures and traditions: from India to Europe...

In what musical line do you identify Nihil Project sound? What so close you do feel of the progressive rock?
Antonello: Usually we play psychedelic music, I guess. I'm terribly interested in British musical productions in the sixties and I'm always trying to find reissues and stuff from that psych-folk scene. Ten years ago and more I listened lots of progressive groups like King Crimson or Area but now it' s not the same. I know progressive music but I don't like it so much!

Andrea: I started listening a lot of progressive and psychedelic music and then I felt interest in electronic, world music, minimal, and many others music, so... I decided to feel free from genres, and following that decision I found Nihil Project on my way!

Which were your motivations to become musicians? What music type did you listen then in that?
Antonello: We born as musicians! I hate the "work-culture", I feel artistic production as religious especially Music and the world of Sound. I feel a musician as an open bridge between God and Earth and that is why I prefer trippy music with spiritual lyrics, from all over the world. Particular songs or tracks are really sacred.

Andrea: We are devoted to Sound... I think that it's the principle of the universe, and playing music is our way to feel "in this world".

I would like to know some the history and recording process of “Paria”, your first album.
Antonello: Well, our very first work was called, in Italian, “Il tramonto dell'Occidente” according to the title of the masterwork of the German philosopher Spengler. In “Paria” we tried to conciliates the past and the future in a new synthesis working with wonderful guys from the first psychedelic advent such as Claudio Rocchi and Mino Di Martino but also with new artists such as Hypnowave and his techno-trance stuff! This could be "progressive" because we like to imagine the future and its possible sound and not to live in the past!

Andrea: For us “Paria” was the first step towards the "professional" use of the recording systems and electronics... with our last album “Samhain” we matured a more complex and modern sound, while in “Paria” we were more "craftmade"... but it was nice!

Well. What can you be about the title of the disc and of the songs?
Antonello: “Paria” is entirely dedicated to Vedic Culture and Hindu Tradition. The English term for the title is Pariah (not so different from our language!). A big part of the album is an hommage to Oriental people against the capitalistic idea of the "struggle between civilizations" created by the horrible essays writer Huntington. We are against the "blood for oil" strategy, obviously!
Another part of the album is against utilitarism, 'cause we wanted to live in a new sacred society as we said on “Thelema” (inspired by Crowley and his "Do what thou will") or on “Sequentia” inspired by Catholic monks such as Hildegard Von Bingen or the Jewish-catholic philosopher Edith Stein.

Andrea: And don't forget that in Indian society Paria means "people who live outside of the castes"!

“Samhain” has just published recently. In your opinion, which are the novelties of this disc regarding the previous one?
Antonello: We could say that “Samhain” is more pop-oriented than “Paria”. “Paria” was very experimental with noisy parts and free form segments, “Samhain” is really peaceful, with moving tunes, traditional melodies and romantic lyrics. After the destruction it’s time to create a new human being... This is one of the message inside our brand new album.

Andrea: As I was saying before, I think that “Samhain” is more mature, more concise and balanced. We didn't leave the experimental attitude, we only learned how to use it... in my opinion “Samhain” is a great album, a good starting point!

Could you give us a brief impression of the songs of this album? How were you inspired to write them?
Antonello: “Samhain” is full of psychedelic moments, with lots of influences such as Celtic music, space rock, English folk, dark ambient, etc... There are several songs like the Sylvian oriented “Beauty is difficult” or the social statement of “And the angels went in two by two” written with the English songwriter Tony Dimeck. Instrumental are very mighty... The title track is similar to a Celtic battle hymn, ”Imbolc” is music for a ritual in the deep woods, ”Be here now” is a strange mix between the Third Ear Band, Tangerine Dream and Aboriginal sounds. You have to listen to the album to understand what I’m trying to explain!

Andrea: We have so many influences... we work with a collective of about 30 musicians, artists, directors, writers, etc. so we find inspiration in a lot of experiences and relationships... it's hard to explain how we reach what we get!

Which is the compositive method that habitually use?
Antonello: I terribly like to improve! It's something like a stream of consciousness... I put my hands on the keyboard-piano and new music lives under my fingers.

Andrea: Yes, improvisation is a great method!! We let the music flow and then we "organize" it... in this sense we really are "composers" of our music... we assemble the result of our stream of consciousnes!!

Are you considered artists that are always looking for new roads to be expressed?
Antonello: Definitely! I love old fashioned music, but we need to look forward! Inside our album there is our interest in Ancient traditions but also our time. A sad time!

Andrea: We need new paths, new trips, new feelings... we have to feed and wake our sleepy humanity!

Has shows already made presenting “Samhain”? How is its work on the scenario?
Antonello: We’ve just started to play “Samhain” live in Italy. Our tour is called “Acid Bards on tour 2005” and it’s really apocalyptic folk oriented. We’ll improve obviously, but we’ll sing some number from “Samhain” and “Paria”, too. Our concert is very similar to a pagan rite, with wild atmospheres, ambiental sounds, poetries etc...

Andrea: We play with different lineups according to the situation... from a minimal trio to a big rock band with many guests!! However we always try to obtain a particular atmosphere, 'cause for us the concert is a sacred rite and not only a pastime!

From now on that it continues? Toward where does Nihil Project go in its following album?
Antonello: I don’t know! Maybe we’ll record a “rites of passage” album with different mixes, new renditions of past releases, live performance etc... We’ll certainly play a Syd Barrett cover called “Vegetable Man” on the “Vegetable Man Project Vol. 5”.

Andrea: I'd like to go on with electronic experimentations... but I haven't yet decided a direction... keep tuned!

When you are not busy composing, rehearsing or does making shows dedicate him time to listen music? What do you listen habitually?
Antonello: My favorite artists are The Beatles and the Italian composer Franco Battiato but I listen every kind of music except reggae or punk or hip hop. From British Elizabethan music to Black metal scene everything is cool to my ears! Are my ears on wrong !?

Andrea: I listen a lot of music of every genre and age... however i like very much psychedelia, electronic music, ethnic music.
Maybe the only kind of music that I don't like at all is the recent punk-ska scene and obviously the commercial pop-music.

What European current bands do you find interesting for their artistic proposal?
Antonello: Porcupine Tree, Anathema, Super Furry Animals are cool! But I like some gothic experiences too like Sol Invictus, Ulver and Death in June. These groups are not very “young” but nothing appeared after them!

Andrea: I found very interesting Coil, then I appreciated Massive Attack, Ozric Tentacles, Stereokimono, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, but actually I don't know any recent band that I can consider interesting. I hope I'll find someone sooner or later...

Lastly, what message would you give to the readers of Nucleus?
Antonello: Do what thou will shall be the whole of the law. Love is the law, love under will!

Andrea: Tune in!
